In May this year i was selected to be the Mayor's cadet for the year 2009-2010. When first selected i had to attend the mayor's dinner at which the new mayor for this year was selected. Since then i have done several activities with the mayor this year including attending the mayor's charity function. I will continue to attend events with the mayor until may 2010 when a new Mayor's cadet is selected.

Being the Mayor's cadet is a great honour as it means you are able to represent your squadron whilst out in the community. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with the Mayor so far and look forward to future events.

Armed Forces Day Parade in Wantage PDF Print E-mail

On 27th June, about 20 cadets went to Wantage to march for Armed Forces Day. We parked in the Leisure Centre, then walked to the Civic Hall. We formed up and started marching to a band. A lot of people were lining the streets, even though it was an absolutely boiling day! We got to the church, and there was a short service. Then we set off again, back round to the Civic Hall. We did an 'eyes left' by Woolys to the mayor, and all the important people. I kept treading on some one's heels! When we got back to the Civic Hall, we hung around for a bit, then walked back to the minibus. We all had something to drink, then drove back to Didcot.

This was my first parades that I actually did a lot of marching in, and I'm glad to say I didn't get out of step except for one time. It was a really good parade, lots of people turned out and some people were cheering and clapping us. It was really hot, and a couple of cadets had to sit out, but everyone finished the parade marching.

D-Day Parade at Harwell Stone PDF Print E-mail

On June 6th I went to Harwell Stone with around 20 other cadets from 2410 Squadron. We got there and split up into 2, depending on height, so all the tall cadets (with Wantage squadron) were lining the path where the flag-bearers were walking up. We were number 2 flight, and basically we just stood at attention through the ceremony. Two cadets from Wantage fainted or nearly fainted, but they were alright in the end. I didn't find it too bad as it was raining and quite cold - just like the actual landings. My feet did hurt though!

I really enjoyed it, and although it was sad because of the history of D-Day, it was a privilege to be there. It's nice to get dressed up in your smart uniform and represent your squadron at parades like this. People like seeing you there, and it's good to have these parades to honour the men that fought on D-Day and in Operation Overlord, because they did a lot for us.

Armed Forces Day 2009 PDF Print E-mail

It was the first ever Armed Forces Day in the England so it will be something to remember for the rest of my life.

It was held in Wantage and we marched from the car park by the church with people from the Royal British Legion, a band and the Air Cadets from both Didcot and Wantage. Once we got to the church we stood there for about 10 minutes where there was also a 2 minute silence for the people in the Armed Forces in the United Kingdom.

Then there was a speech from the vicar, after that we marched through the centre of Wantage down the road with the band playing music. There were also people watching and clapping on the pavement as we went past them, once we had got back to the starting building the parade was dismissed. From there we went back to the minibus to get drinks as it was really hot so everyone was thirsty.

The weather was amazing, but it was a bit to hot when we were standing outside the church.

I think that everyone enjoyed it and everything went well, hopefully next year it will be like this year, but next time with more people from our squadron!Smile

Poppy Appeal Walk PDF Print E-mail

On the 10th May 2410 squadron took part in a 10 mile sponsored walk for the Poppy Appeal. We walked with the cadets from Wantage squadron and the Army Cadet Force. We started at 9 am, had check points every 2 miles and breaks every 20-30 minutes. It took us 3 hours and 50 minutes to complete the walk. In this time we all made new friends some from both Wantage squadron and the Army Cadets. The previous Mayor of Didcot and officers from all forces also did the walk.

It was a nice sunny day for the walk; we were walking in our green uniform and it was hot but fun.

When we got back to the start there was a BBQ and a band playing. We had time to relax and rest our feet, also we either got tanned or burnt. We have raised a lot of money for the Poppy Appeal.
