Air Recce (Air Recognition)
This year, we entered 4 cadets into the Wing Air Recognition Competition at Wing HQ in Abingdon (Sgt Edwards, Cpl Hill, Cpl Kenward and Cdt Peck). We also entered two models, one made by CI Webb, and one also by Cpl Kenward.
After going through pictures of 34 different aircraft (30 competition and 4 tie brakers), we ended up coming first as a team with 46 points. Cpl Kenward’s model went through to region, but unfortunately, CI Webb’s didn’t. (It was a very good model though!)
Region Air Recce was held at RAF Lynham, in Wiltshire. Teams from wings including Dorset and IOW, Herts. And Bucks, as well as our team and an individual form Wallingford Squadron and others, took part. Unfortunately, we only came fourth. There was tough competition! Cpl Kenward’s model did also unfortunately not go through.
However, well done to the Wallingford Cadet, who went through to represent the corps as an individual.

Wing Challenge 2009 was an awesome weekend. I got to spend the weekend with seven cool people from our squadron. Our squadron had to compete with 22 squadrons from around Thames Valley Wing. We had to complete a variety of field craft challenges; Radio’s, First Aid, Orienteering, Map Reading, Leadership, Patrolling and Picture Puzzle.
We did fantastically well and came 7th overall. The weather was perfect for sleeping in our bashers outside and for doing the activities. We all seemed to enjoy the rat pack food, especially the vegemite. Everyone had a great time, although we were very tired at the end of it. Bring on the next Wing Challenge. |

Earlier this year 7 cadets and myself attended Wing Challenge at the Bramley training base. This was a weekend doing field craft and earning points for our squadron. All 27 squadrons in the Thames Valley Wing compete. This is great fun and a chance to meet cadets from all over the wing. Throughout the weekend marks are awarded for team work, radios, field craft etc. It is also a good way to get to know people from your squadron.
We had alot of fun doing this and hope to do it again next year. |

We climbed two mountains on the first day of our trip. Each member of the group had a turn to navigate up the mountain and in the steeper parts (and some what scarier parts) we all worked together to help each other reach the top. On the second day, we attempted a cross-country walk, however due to the unpredictable Welsh weather this had to cut short. The third day saw the cadets complete a cross-country walk without members of staff present; this meant that we had to navigate ourselves without the aid or hints from staff. Our accommodation was a large cabin, where we catered for ourselves.
