At the end of october this year i travelled to Dundee to do my flying scholarship with Tayside Aviation. Only 150 cadets get selcted from the whole of the corps each year so it was an excellent oppurtunity.

Whilst i was there i was learning how to fly the PA28 warrior which is a small 4 seater aircraft. The course involves both theory and practical lessons but most of the time is spent in the air flying. While there i made some new friends and got the chance to have a look around dundee.

I managed to do just under 7 hours whilst i was there and unfortunately had to stop before i could finish the course. However i hope to be going back in the near future to finish the course and gain a solo flight. Im really looking forward to going back because everyone there is so nice and easy to get along with, its a lot of fun and an amazing oppurtunity.

Myself and Cdt Cheswick went flying in GrobTutors at RAF Benson, it was great we had lots of fun, and the flying was enjoyable. Cdt Cheswick said he enjoyed his first flight, I also enjoyed my second flight doing acrobatics.

Flying is one of the things I have allways wanted to do, and doing acrobatics is even better.

We are definately going again and would recommend flying to anyone who hasnt yet been, it's an experience well worth doing! Smile

Air Cadet Pilot Navigators Course PDF Print E-mail

On Wednesday August 12th 2009, I embarked upon my Air Cadet Pilot Navigators Course at RAF Benson.

It was a two week-long course where I learned how to navigate and fly a Grob 115 (Tutor) at both high altitude and low level. There were seven different navigation exercises to complete before the final test.

The first nav-ex was just a fly around and I got shown what different fix points look like from both 2000 feet and 500 feet. Nav-ex's two to seven, I had to plan - including the route, heading, length and time, fuel and then calculate the effect of wind - and then go out and fly.

The flights lasted about an hour and I got to fly around the country, including to Northampton and Salisbury. The best flight was my final test flight. We took off from RAF Benson and flew to Colerne in Somerset. We landed at Colerne, taxied round and then took off again and headed for Glastonbury. Just before reaching Glastonbury we went low level, and used Glastonbury Tor as a turning point, as we went past we were lower than the Tor itself. It was cool! We then headed back to Benson but got diverted to RAF Brize-Norton. It was only a practice diversion, but we did a 'touch and go' at Brize, before landing back at Benson.

Overall the course was fantastic and I had loads of fun. I passed and was awarded my Pilot Navigator Wing.

I think the best part of the course was the low level flying.Laughing

Flying: The Tutor PDF Print E-mail

Smile Flying is, in my opinion, probably the best experience that the Air Training Corps offers; especially if you want to become a pilot.

We fly the Grob 115 (Tutor) from RAF Benson. When you first go, you will probably feel nervous - I did. Once you get up there, you'll have the time of your life. You learn about the different instruments in front of you from your friendly instructor - don't worry, they are all highly experienced!

On your first flight, you are shown the local area and, if you want, taken to see your house. If you go again, you'll be able to experience aerobatics, and the Tutor has some tricks up its sleeve!

You can choose what you want to do with your time. Have fun, learn something new and most of all, enjoy yourself.

Gliding Scholarship PDF Print E-mail

I’m currently in the process of doing my GS and it is the best thing ever. I think of it this way, you're allowed to fly before you can drive, how’s that!!! I’ve got another 1.5 to 2 hours left before I’m allowed to go solo and I’m getting really scared.

I go gliding every Sunday but you can choose to do either Saturday or Sunday. I go to 612 VGS at Abingdon and it is very nice place. The instructors at 612 VGS are very nice people and are very helpful.

On Sunday December 7th 2008, I went gliding and it was beautiful. Ok I was learning but admiring the view at the same time. Days like that are fantastic for gliding, there is hardly any wind and you don’t have to correct yourself much (The aircraft gets blown about in the wind)

It’s a lot of fun and I would recommend anyone to do it, hopefully I should be going solo and getting my silver wings soon. Fingers crossed Laughing
